Hurricane Season Is Here: Protect Your Family's Most Important Documents Before the Storm

Here in Pinellas County, we know the drill: the water, the batteries, the shutters, the gas tank. But there's one part of hurricane preparedness that too many Tampa Bay families leave until it's too late — your paperwork.
When a storm is three days out, banks get crowded, offices close early, and finding a notary becomes one more thing on an already overwhelming list. The good news? A little preparation now, in the calm weeks, means one less worry when the cone of uncertainty shows up on the evening news.
Why Documents Matter in Hurricane Season

After a major storm, families often need to act fast — filing insurance claims, authorizing a family member to handle affairs, proving ownership, or making medical decisions for a loved one. Nearly all of those moments require documents that are signed, witnessed, and notarized correctly ahead of time.
If the originals are damaged, lost, or were never executed in the first place, recovery gets slower, harder, and more stressful — right when your family needs things to be simple.
Your Hurricane Document Checklist
Before the peak of the season (August through October), take an afternoon to review these:
Power of Attorney (POA). If you evacuate — or if a storm leaves you unable to handle your own affairs — a properly notarized POA lets someone you trust manage banking, insurance, and property matters on your behalf.
Under Florida law, a POA must be signed before two witnesses and acknowledged by a notary to be valid — learn more in The Florida Bar's consumer guide to Powers of Attorney.
Healthcare Directives & Living Wills. Hospitals and care facilities may be operating under emergency conditions after a storm. Having your healthcare wishes documented, witnessed, and notarized in advance protects you and spares your family painful uncertainty.
The Florida Bar's guide to advance directives and living wills is an excellent starting point.
Wills, Trusts & Estate Documents. These require precise witnessing under Florida law. Don't wait for an emergency to discover a signature is missing.

Insurance & Property Records. Photograph your home and belongings, and keep copies of your deed, title, and policies. Some claim-related affidavits will require notarization — knowing your notary before the storm saves precious time after it.

Travel & Minor Consent Forms. If children may evacuate with a grandparent, relative, or family friend, a notarized consent form prevents complications at hospitals, schools, and shelters.

How to Store Them
Keep originals in a waterproof, fireproof container you can grab in minutes. Store digital copies in secure cloud storage, and consider leaving a second set with a trusted family member outside the storm zone.
