Why Do Banks Sometimes Reject Notary Blocks? Here's What You Can Do Instead

When you're dealing with a loved one’s Power of Attorney, estate plan, or urgent medical documents, time is precious — and clarity is everything. Many people turn to their local bank for notarization services, only to hear the frustrating words:
❌ “We can’t notarize this.”
So… why does this happen?
🔎 It's Not About the Bank — It's About Florida’s Legal Requirements
As someone who spent time working inside a bank, I understand the care and compliance measures banks must take to protect both the customer and their institution. But here’s what most people don’t realize: Florida notary laws have changed, and your document must include specific legal language called a notary block in order to be completed — no matter where you go.
In 2020, Florida began requiring 9 key elements in each notarization block per §117.05(4)(c), including:
The venue (State of Florida, County of…)
Type of notarization (acknowledgment, oath, etc.)
Signer’s name
Date of notarization
Signature of the notary
Printed name of the notary
Notary seal
Notary commission expiration date
Notary ID number
If even one element is missing, banks or notaries are required by law to reject the document — it’s not about being difficult, it’s about doing it right.
